Starting sequence

Starter will spin starter ring gear.

This is connected to the mounting shaft sitting on two bearings or bushes.

On this shaft there is a combination sprag-clutch and bearing.

The sprag-cultch will engage the pulley that has a belt that is connected to the crankshaft.

When the engine starts and the starter motor is stopped, the clutch disengages and the pulley on the shaft free-wheals.
